Initial discussion on number of parish council members, term, frequency & length of meetings
Discussion indicated members might prefer to meet every two months for one hour. Meetings used to be on Monday. Fr John requested to move this to the third Tuesday. No one in attendance expressed conflict with this proposal. We will decide at next meeting how often we should meet.
Dr. Ray Chimezie: project in Nigeria
Dr. Ray spoke to us about the Fulbright scholarship he was awarded to teach and conduct research, on the shortage of medical doctors, in Nigeria. They pay all his travel and living expenses for one year. He has been actively involved in health education in Richmond for many years, particularly in the West Contra Costa School district. He requests our assistance to help fund charitable needs while he is in Nigeria. Discussion ensued as how to best accomplish this mission, e.g. shipping medical supplies, providing materials to improve living conditions, etc. Parish took second collection last weekend to give to Dr. Ray for initial assistance. Parish will add to this, amount to be determined. We agreed that it would be best if Dr. Ray sends us emails throughout the year to let us know how we can help. He exchanged contact info with school principal so that we can look for ways to involve our school children.
Parish School: new principal
Mr. Jojo de Guzman shared with us more about himself, e.g. where he has taught in the past and his excitement about serving our school. He informed us that we have 20 new families signed up so far, but this only brings us to approx. 145 students enrolled (including Willows). This is half of our capacity. We discussed the need for marketing and how we as a parish can take strong ownership of our parish school.
Fr John stated that we need to establish a new finance council. He will meet with Andy Lojo to get more about the history of the past council and recommendations about how to proceed.
Daily Masses, Confessions & Devotions
Fr John announced that our morning Masses will move from 8 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. so that all of student body can participate in the morning assembly at school and still be able to attend Mass. We discussed the possibility of adding an evening Mass, along with Eucharistic adoration and confessions preceding Mass. We also talked about adding a Spanish Mass on Sundays. Parishioners will be provided an opportunity to complete a survey over the next couple of weekends in order to get feedback on this proposal and discern the best time for daily and Sunday Masses. We will try to implement new schedule in October.
Meeting ended with closing prayer at 8:30 p.m.
